Professor Peter Coates served as keynote speaker at the Nature&Nation workshop.

Professor Coates is a very well known scholar in environmental history and he does not need any introduction. He has extensively published on a variety of subjects, which are connected to the topic of this workshop in several ways. In particular, his studies on the American attitudes to introduced species of flora and fauna (American Perceptions of Immigrant and Invasive Species, 2007) has enlightened new connections between nations and nature. Finally, his current research project ‘Militarized Landscapes in the Twentieth Century: Britain, France and the United States’ – funded by the AHRC’s Landscape and Environment Programme – seems to be an excelent case for blending nations and nature in the environmental historical narrative.
